Everybody living to a strict budget goes without in some way or another. Sometimes, this can be extreme and so much more than not having satellite TV. They go without heating over eating. They may go without paying the electricity bill to be able to scrape the last of their mortgage payment together. These are the most extreme examples of going without when you’re a hard worker or saver already, and yet one topic that always comes up when you’re living to a budget is the fact you need a holiday – but you don’t think you can afford one. You don’t just want one; you NEED one. You NEED to feel the sand between your toes, feel the heat on your face and the sharpness of a fruity cocktail as you sip on your Pina Colada. You may be living to a budget, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to afford a break for yourself.

Think about it: you can find discounts for just about anything online these days, and holidays are no different, especially if you book your holiday privately. You don’t have to pay through the nose with a package holiday when there are plenty of lucky ones out there in their retirement who are turning their homes abroad into the perfect getaway and earning an income with it. These are the people you need to contact for a break, as they’re more likely to have cheaper accommodation.

They use services like Concierge Airbnb to manage bookings, and they’re fortunate enough to be able to run offers in a way that large chain hotels often can’t. It’s the same with flights: you can find SO many deals as long as you’re willing to go a little further than your local airport to fly from.

There are some easy suggestions for making your holiday as cheap as possible, and some of those include:

  • Building your own self-catering holiday by approaching the hotel and the airline separately could be an excellent way to get a lower price rather than going for a package holiday with a travel agency.
  • Going against the grain and travelling out of season is a great way to save some cash: no one else wants to be there! Contrary to popular belief, it’s not instantly freezing cold or dull just because you’ve gone out of season!
  • Late bookings where airlines or accommodation need to fill the rooms are a perfect way to get a budget holiday. They drop their prices at the last minute to earn anything rather than nothing, and this can make a big difference to the cost you’d pay.
  • Going to a destination that isn’t on the ‘most exciting’ lists is a great way to save some money while exploring somewhere in the world off the beaten track.

You can absolutely holiday on a budget; you just need to be a little creative about where you go and how you live while you’re out there.
