Secret Discounts for the Over 60’s

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

So you’ve hit the big 6 0, sixty, and no doubt feeling a mixture of ‘how the heck did I get to be this old’ and ‘great, can I get any discounts for hitting this milestone age!

Yes, one of the positive sides to reaching 60 is that you can benefit from discounts on lots of things, and if you were lucky enough to sneak in and claim your pension at 60, then all these little discounts can be extra helpful when you are a girl on a pension!

You will all be aware of your free bus pass and free prescription charges, and eye tests, but here are a few more discounts that you are eligible for that you may not be quite so aware of.

Food

We all like to eat out now and again, and if you are 60 and over, you can get special offers at Greene King Pubs, with senior deals starting at £4.99 for 2 courses.  Their fish and chips are usually really good value. A good ‘go-to’ place on a Friday!

The Hungry Horse chain also do an offer called the Golden Years Menu, which is £4.70 for 2 courses. The portion sizes may be a little smaller than the main menu size, but it still sounds like good value for money to me.

Dobbies is a popular Garden Centre destination dotted all over the UK, they do a Senior Citizens 2-course lunch for £7.45, which includes tea and coffee.

It’s always worthwhile phoning and asking at any pub or restaurant to see if they do any special offers. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Day’s Out and Special Treats

If you are still a thrill seeker in your 60’s, then, believe it or not, Alton Towers will offer you a 50% discount on your entrance to the park.  You’ll need some ID, and proof of age, and of course, you’d be wise to go with an age-appropriate person, such as someone who is actually half your age just in case of any unfortunate incidents.

Senior Rail Card deals also offer you some great discounts, not only on railcards but also discounts at museums and the theatre, check out their website for all the information.

Cinema

Nearly all of the major Cinema chains offer some sort of discounts to over 60’s. You may have to be flexible on your day, but the fact that you can enjoy all the latest releases, sometimes with a free drink might just be preferable to afternoon repeats of Midsomer Murders!

And although they always say you can’t take your own food in, many is the time, I’ve enjoyed a Marks and Sparks yellow sticker sticky bun with my ‘free’ coffee.  Don’t be intimidated, they just want you to buy their yukky popcorn instead.  It’s amazing what you can eat under cover of darkness!

Other random but worthwhile offers

You can swim free at any local authority owned swimming pools outside of school holidays, and if you fancy a spot of Tai Chi, as a new hobby, then you can get a special rate and free classes if you join up.

The Camping and Caravan Club offers 25% off site fees during the off peak season, and if Rome should be on your bucket list over 65’s can get free entrance to many museums and public monuments AND, those who aren’t quite there yet can get free entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel on the last Sunday of each month.  Who knew!?
